Manhattan is the most well-known borough and is home to many of the major tourist attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, and Times Square.

The Bronx is home to Yankee Stadium and the New York Botanical Garden, as well as being the birthplace of hip-hop.

Staten Island is a more residential borough and is known for its free ferry offering incredible views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan.

Some of the best places to shop in New York include Fifth Avenue, Times Square, SoHo, and the Lower East Side.

The city is served by three major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

The history of New York dates back thousands of years when the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes.

In 1524, the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed to the region, but it was not until 1609 that the Dutch explorer Henry Hudson sailed up the river that now bears his name and claimed the area for the Netherlands.

The Dutch established the colony of New Amsterdam in the area that is now Lower Manhattan in 1624. The colony grew slowly and passed to British control in 1664 when it was renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York, the brother of the King of England.

The city became an important port during the American Revolution and in 1785 became the capital of the United States. During the 19th century, the city grew rapidly with the arrival of European immigrants and became a global financial and cultural center.

In the late 19th century, the city underwent major development, with the construction of bridges, tunnels, and skyscrapers, including the Flatiron Building, the Woolworth Building, and the Chrysler Building. During Prohibition, the city became known as the capital of organized crime, with gangs like the Mafia controlling the alcohol trade and other illegal activities.

The city suffered a major setback on September 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center was attacked by Islamic terrorists. The attack killed almost three thousand people and forever changed the landscape and psyche of the city.

Today, New York is one of the most iconic and recognized cities in the world, a center of business, culture, fashion, art, and entertainment, with over eight million residents and millions of visitors each year.
